Little children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Humility

1 Peter 5:5-6

In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time,

Good Works

Names and Attributes of God

A Scripture guide to who God is and what his character reveals.

Read the supporting Scripture for each name or attribute. Notice what the passage reveals about God, then turn that truth into prayer. These study labels summarize the passages; they are not additional Scripture quotations.

Holy One

I AM

When Moses encountered God in the burning bush, the Lord instructed him to tell the Israelites that "I AM" sent him. This is a name of the ultimate independent, self-complete being. Jesus also used many "I AM" statements to reveal himself as God, like "I am the bread of life" John 6:35.

Exodus 3:13-15

Then Moses asked God, 'If I go to the Israelites and say to them, "The God of your ancestors has sent me to you," and they ask me, "What is his name?" what should I tell them?' God replied to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.' God also said to Moses, 'Say this to the Israelites: The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.'

John 10:7-11

So Jesus said again, 'Truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn't listen to them. I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.'

John 14:6

Jesus told him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Prayer

You are the Great I AM, the only one who is perfectly self-sufficient. Thank You that I can find all that I need in You.

Infinite

You can't measure God-He can't be defined by size or amount. He has no beginning, no end, and no limits.

Job 11:7-9

Can you discover the secrets of God or find the limit of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens-what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol-what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.

Psalm 136:1-3, 26EXCERPT

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords. His faithful love endures forever... Give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures forever.

Romans 11:33

Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments and untraceable his ways!

Prayer

Lord, I'm in awe of your infinite nature. Help me better understand your measureless wisdom, grace, and love.

Omnipotent

God is all-powerful. He spoke all things into being, and all things-every microorganism, every breath you take-is sustained by Him. There is nothing too difficult for Him.

Psalm 33:6-9

The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the water of the sea into a heap; he puts the depths into storehouses. Let the whole earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it came into being; he commanded, and it stood firm.

Jeremiah 32:17

Oh, Lord God! You yourself made the heavens and earth by your great power and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you.

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.

Prayer

You are the all-powerful God. Grant me the faith and confidence to trust in Your limitless strength, knowing nothing is impossible with You.

Immutable

All that God is, He has always been. All that He has been and is, He will ever be. He is ever perfect and unchanging.

Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind. Does he speak and not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

Psalm 102:25-27

Long ago you established the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like clothing. You will change them like a garment, and they will pass away. But you are the same, and your years will never end.

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Prayer

You are the unchanging One. Lord, be my constant in a world that's constantly changing.

Holy

God's holiness is not simply our best image of perfection. God is utterly and supremely untainted. His holiness stands apart-unique and incomprehensible.

Isaiah 6:1-3

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphim were standing above him; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth.

1 Peter 1:13-16

Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, 'Be holy, because I am holy.'

Revelation 4:8-11EXCERPT

Each of the four living creatures had six wings; they were covered with eyes around and inside. Day and night they never stop, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, who is, and who is to come... 'Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.'

Prayer

Lord, Your holiness is beyond my comprehension and yet, I marvel at Your awesome perfection and purity. Show me how You're transforming me to be holy like You are holy.

Omniscient

This means God is all-knowing. God's knowledge encompasses every possible piece of information regarding anything that currently exists, existed in the past, or will exist in the future.

Psalm 103:14

For he knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust.

Psalm 139:1-6

Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my camp; you are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; you have placed your hand on me. This wondrous knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.

1 John 3:20

For whenever our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts and knows all things.

Prayer

You are the all-knowing God, which means nothing takes You by surprise. Lord, thank You for knowing the best way for my life.

Omnipresent

God is everywhere-in and around everything, close to everyone.

Psalm 139:7-12

Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold me. If I say, 'Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will become night'-even the darkness is not dark to you. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are the same to you.

Jeremiah 23:23-24

'Am I only a God nearby,' says the Lord, 'and not a God far away? Can a person hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?' says the Lord. 'Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?' says the Lord.

Matthew 28:20EXCERPT

...teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Prayer

You are the God who is everywhere. Even when my way seems dark, Your presence is there and with me. Thank You for promising to never leave me.

Creator God

Mighty Creator

God created it all-separating light from the darkness; land from water; day from night. He is transcendent, mighty, and strong. He displays His supreme power, sovereignty, and faithfulness in His covenant relationship with you.

Genesis 1:1, 2:1-2EXCERPT

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth... So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed. On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

Isaiah 40:28

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never becomes faint or weary; there is no limit to his understanding.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

Prayer

Mighty Creator, it amazes me how You, who created the sun, moon, and stars, desire a relationship with me. Thank You! Help me to notice Your beauty around me.

Love

God's love is so great that He gave His only Son to bring us into fellowship with Him. God's love not only encompasses the world, but embraces you personally and intimately.

Psalm 13:5

But I have trusted in your faithful love; my heart will rejoice in your deliverance.

John 3:16-17

For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

1 John 4:7-10

Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Prayer

Lord, Your love is limitless and sacrificial. Help me to trust Your unfailing love, especially when I'm tempted to base it on my performance. Teach me how to love others as You have first loved me.

Lord Who Provides

Just as He provided yesterday, He will also provide today and tomorrow. He grants deliverance from sin, the oil of joy for the ashes of sorrow, and eternal citizenship in His Kingdom for all those adopted into His household.

Genesis 22:13-14

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said, 'It will be provided on the Lord's mountain.'

Matthew 6:28-30

And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don't labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. If that's how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won't he do much more for you-you of little faith?

Philippians 4:19

And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Prayer

Lord Who Provides, You are a God of both miraculous and daily provision. I hand You my worry as I wonder how my needs will be met. Remind me of how You provided in the past.

Good

God is the embodiment of perfect goodness. He is kind, caring, and full of favor toward all of creation.

1 Chronicles 16:34

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever.

Psalm 34:8

Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!

James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Prayer

God who is perfect goodness, thank You for being One whose goodness encompasses Your every move. Lord, help me to notice Your goodness in my life and to offer Your goodness to those around me.

God Almighty

God is all-sufficient, all-bountiful, the source of all blessings, and with whom all things are possible.

Genesis 17:1-2

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'I am God Almighty. Live in my presence and be blameless. I will set up my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you greatly.'

Psalm 8:1, 9EXCERPT

Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with your majesty... Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!

Matthew 19:26

Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'

Prayer

God Almighty, I worship You. You are One who is all-sufficient and the source of every blessing I have. Thank You that even when things seem impossible to me, You are a God of endless possibilities.

Light of the World

In the Old Testament, God went ahead of His people as a pillar of fire to provide light in the darkness (Exodus 13:21). In the New Testament, Jesus called himself the Light of the World. It's through Jesus that you are a light to the world around you, pointing people to Him.

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-whom should I dread?

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them again: 'I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.'

1 John 1:6

If we say, 'We have fellowship with him,' and yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth.

Prayer

Light of the World, thank You that there is no darkness in You. Help me to walk in Your light-in honesty with You, others, and even myself. Please light the way before me and teach me how to be a light to those in my circle of influence.

The First and The Last

Jesus reveals himself as the Alpha and the Omega, which are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. It's His way of saying He had the first word at the creation of the world (Genesis 1:1) and that He will have the last word when He renews the world. Every moment in between, Jesus is at work in our lives and in our world.

Isaiah 48:12

Listen to me, Jacob, and Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first, and I am the last.

Philippians 1:6

I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Revelation 22:13

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for being The First and The Last word, not only in this world, but in my life. This comforts me when it seems like the enemy will have the last word. Thanks for Your continuous work from beginning to end and Your promise to complete the good work You began in me.

The Lord is My Banner

This name of God paints the picture of a banner alongside an army going to battle. The banner reminded them who they belonged to and were fighting for. This name describes God as one who is powerful enough to overcome any enemy. Under His banner you go from triumph to triumph (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Exodus 17:15

And Moses built an altar and named it, 'The Lord Is My Banner.'

Psalm 60:4

You have given a signal flag to those who fear you, so that they may flee from the bow.

1 Corinthians 15:56-57

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

Prayer

Lord, my Banner, You see every enemy before me. You know how to guide me through the battle. Thank You for ultimate victory through Jesus Christ.

The Lord is Just

God is righteous and holy, fair and equitable in all things. You can trust Him to always do what is right.

Deuteronomy 32:4

The Rock-his work is perfect; all his ways are just. A faithful God, without bias, righteous and upright is he.

Psalm 75:6-7

For exaltation does not come from the east, the west, or the desert. God is the Judge: he brings one down, he exalts another.

Romans 3:25-26

God presented him as the atoning sacrifice in his blood, received through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God passed over the sins previously committed. God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be just and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.

Prayer

Lord, You are just and You see the need in our world for justice. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Thank You for Jesus who paid the price for my life, for You remain both just and merciful.

God Who Sanctifies

A God separate from all that is evil requires that the people who follow Him be cleansed from all evil. It's through Jesus and His death and resurrection that you are seen as cleansed, pure, and holy.

Leviticus 20:7-8

Set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the Lord your God. Keep my statutes and follow them; I am the Lord who sets you apart as holy.

John 17:17-19

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Hebrews 10:10, 14EXCERPT

By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all... For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Prayer

God Who Sanctifies, You are my source of sanctification-cleansing, purifying, and transforming my heart to look more like Yours. I recognize there is nothing in my ability to rid myself of sin. Thank You for being the One who sanctifies me through Jesus.

Merciful

God's merciful compassion is infinite and inexhaustible. Through Christ, He took the judgment that was rightfully yours and placed it on His own shoulders. He waits and works now for all people to turn to Him and to live under His justification.

Deuteronomy 4:31

For the Lord your God is a compassionate God. He will not leave you, destroy you, or forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them.

Nehemiah 9:31

But because of your great compassion, you did not destroy them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and compassionate God.

Hebrews 2:17

Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.

Prayer

Merciful God, thank You that Your mercy doesn't depend on my perfection, but on Your unchanging character. When I fall short, Your grace welcomes me back. Help me to rest securely in Your inexhaustible compassion today.

for through faith you are all sons of God in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 4:6

I am a slave of God and a slave to righteousness.

Romans 6:18-19

And having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourself as slaves to moral impurity and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.

But now, since you have been set free from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your profit, which results in sanctification-and the end is eternal life.

I am a fellow citizen with the rest of God's family.

For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

I have been established, anointed, and sealed by God.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

Now the one who solidifies us together with you in Christ and anointed us is God. He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts.

I am free from any condemning charges against me because God is for me.

Romans 8:31-34

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything?
